Tom Taulli mentions KMaps commercial opportunities in his latest Forbes article about online maps and mashups revolution.

InformationWeek mentions KMaps as a free alternative to paid for mobile location software in the excellent "Maps On The Move" cover story. One note though. They mention that KMaps is a Palm based software as the large number of KMaps users run KMaps on their Treos. However, KMaps is J2ME application that happily runs on Palm based phones and PDAs, but equally well on Blackberries while the controlled porting to the other J2ME phones is in progress.

KMaps Facts

“I have mobility problems. Severe arthritis and a fused spine make walking complicated and painful at most times. Unnecessary time on my feet uses up what standing strength I do have. Despite being able to drive myself I cannot always drive to the very door I want especially with my job. I aid other persons with disabilities in Idaho, and my state is very very large and rural. I drive throughout the state to places I’ve never been and on streets I’ve never known. Rural means that in real terms the address next door is sometimes hundreds of yards or more distant from any discoverable signage. With KMAPS I’ve been able to determine, in advance, locations and the walking distances between discoverable points. It’s saved me from being on “the wrong side of the tracks” more than once. Ordinary mapping, including some GPS, often lacks the detail necessary to avoid being immediately adjacent but inaccessible, the so-called “you can’t get there from here” event. KMAPS has always provided the relevant detail to assure me I can see where I’m going before I get there. Thank you for a splendid program, one residing right in my Treo 650 at all times.”
